True Love Waits // Radiohead
As a Radiohead fan, “True Love Waits” is one of my favourite songs out of their flawless discography. A hidden gem – the song has never been released on a studio album. Here, it is played solo by frontman Thom Yorke for the 2001 live album I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings. True Love Waits is a pretty simple acoustic song but tugs at the listener’s heartstrings with its humble yet bittersweet melody. Yorke’s high, keening voice is a perfect fit for the song, as he sings the achingly beautiful lyrics “I’m not living, I’m just killing time.” Like a child abandoned by his parents at the carnival, voice trembling on the edge, he begs the lover to "just don’t leave”, his desperate plead turning into a lament. This is definitely a gorgeous song, no embellishments needed.
